Malnutrition,
whether due to overweight, emaciation or micronutrient deficiencies, affects
the life quality of around 2.362 million people around the world according to
the World Health Organization. When we think of a solution to this problem,
perhaps the first thing that comes to mind is not cannabis. Although this plant
is best known for its use in gastronomic infusions, the reality is that it is a
food in itself and all parts of raw cannabis provide important nutrients that
can be eaten without generating psychoactive effects.
The
leaves, trunks, branches and buds of the plant are edible and provide us with
essential nutrients that are beneficial to our health, such as omega-3s, amino
acids, dietary fiber, enzymes, minerals, flavonoids, protein, vitamins and
phytocannabinoids. It was Dr. William L. Courntey, a well-known cannabis
activist, who popularized cannabis juice, which is made from all the parts of
raw cannabis already mentioned.
Raw
cannabis contains THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) and CBDA (cannabidiolic
acid). THCA has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antiemetic properties, meaning
it helps to relieve nausea and vomiting. On the other hand, CBDA also has
anti-inflammatory and antiemetic properties, but its ability to combat tumor
cell mutation has also been studied. There are recipes for incorporating the
leaves and stems of raw cannabis into salads accompanied by lettuce and spinach
leaves.
Hemp
seeds are also a highly nutritious aliment, especially for those looking to
improve their protein intake. Also, these seeds are a great source of fiber and
omega-3s. Hemp seeds help us improve digestion, cardiovascular health and
maintain proper brain function.
Another
way to incorporate cannabis into our diet can be through hemp seed oil, which
contains fatty acids that cannot be made by the human body naturally, but are
necessary for its nutrition. Plant-based milk has become very popular in recent
years, and hemp milk is one of the most nutritious alternatives in this
category, with more protein and healthy fats than rice milk or almond milk. A
smoothie made from hemp milk with added hemp seeds is a great way to boost our
nutrition in the morning. These seeds are so versatile that they can be
sprinkled on top of salad, added to oatmeal, mixed with hummus, or even added
to cookie and muffin mix.
Considering
that in many parts of the world, the cannabis plant can grow easily, it’s easy
to conclude that this food, in its various forms, could help countless people
globally who are suffering from malnutrition.
